Home Battery Rebates in Victoria (2026): What Geelong Homeowners Can Claim
How the federal battery discount works in 2026, what Victoria still offers for solar, and why the 1 January 2027 step matters.
The short answer
If you live in Geelong and you're thinking about a home battery, the main help available in 2026 is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. It takes a discount off the price of an eligible battery through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
Victoria's Solar Homes program still offers up to $1,400 towards solar panels, but Solar Victoria is no longer taking applications for interest-free battery loans, and its pages describe no state battery rebate.
The date that matters is 1 January 2027. From then, the number of certificates a battery earns per kWh drops from 6.8 to 5.7. For the same battery, that means a smaller discount.
How the federal battery discount works
What is an STC?
An STC is a certificate created when an eligible small-scale renewable system, such as solar panels or a home battery, is installed. Installers or retailers usually claim the certificates for you and take their value off your quote. That is why it shows up as a discount rather than a cheque.
How many certificates a battery gets
The number of certificates depends on the battery's usable capacity (in kWh) and the STC factor in force when the battery is installed. Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity counts, and it is tiered:
Usable capacity
Share of the factor that applies
First 14 kWh
100%
Over 14 kWh to 28 kWh
60%
Over 28 kWh to 50 kWh
15%
The published schedule
The Clean Energy Regulator publishes the factor (certificates per kWh) for each period. It steps down over time:
Period
STC factor
January to April 2026
8.4
May to December 2026 (now)
6.8
January to June 2027
5.7
July to December 2027
5.2
January to June 2028
4.6
July to December 2028
4.1
January to June 2029
3.6
July to December 2029
3.1
January to June 2030
2.6
July to December 2030
2.1
Worked examples
Here is roughly how many certificates common battery sizes earn now and from 1 January 2027:
Usable battery size
Certificates at 6.8 (to 31 Dec 2026)
Certificates at 5.7 (from 1 Jan 2027)
10 kWh
68
57
13.5 kWh
91.8
76.95
20 kWh
119.68
100.32
For the same battery, that is about 16% fewer certificates from January 2027, and about 24% fewer from July 2027.
We've shown certificates rather than dollars on purpose. The dollar value of each certificate depends on the STC market price, which moves. Your installer should show you the dollar discount on your quote.
What Victoria offers right now
Solar Homes solar panel rebate. Solar Victoria offers up to $1,400 towards solar panels, capped at 50% of the purchase cost and calculated after the STC discount. This matters if you're buying solar and a battery together, or adding solar for the first time.
Interest-free loan. You can also take an optional interest-free loan matching the rebate (up to $1,400). From 1 May 2026, you must select the loan when you apply.
Battery loans have closed. Solar Victoria is no longer taking applications for interest-free battery loans. Its battery page doesn't describe a Victorian battery rebate and points homeowners to the federal program instead.
Who qualifies
Federal battery discount checklist
- The battery is on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved battery list.
- It is installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited installer with a battery endorsement.
- The installation complies with AS/NZS 5139:2019 and Victorian electrical safety laws.
- It is installed with a new or existing solar system of no more than 100 kW.
- Its nominal capacity is between 5 kWh and 100 kWh.
- It is new and hasn't been claimed before.
- It is the only battery claimed at the premises (one per premises).
- It is capable of joining a virtual power plant (VPP).
Solar Homes solar panel rebate checklist
- You are the owner-occupier of an existing home (or the owner of a home under construction).
- The combined taxable income of all owners is under $150,000 a year.
- The property is worth under $3 million.
- No solar PV has been installed at the address in the last 10 years.
- The address hasn't already received a Solar Victoria solar panel or battery rebate.
- You use an authorised retailer and eligible products.
Does waiting change the discount?
Yes, on the published schedule. The certificate factor falls from 6.8 to 5.7 on 1 January 2027, and again to 5.2 from July 2027. For the same battery installed later, the certificate count is lower.
We can't tell you what battery prices will do, and no one honestly can. The practical step is to get a current quote now and compare it, so you know exactly what the discount is worth on your system today.
How the discount should appear on your quote
A good quote shows the battery discount as its own line, with the number of certificates and the dollar value applied. If you're also claiming Solar Homes for panels, that should appear separately too. If a quote only shows one "after rebates" total, ask for the breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need solar panels to get the battery discount? Yes. The battery must be installed with a new or existing solar system of 100 kW or less.
How big can the battery be? Nominal capacity must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, and only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity counts towards certificates.
Can I claim for two batteries? No. Only one battery per premises is eligible.
Can I get the Solar Homes rebate if I already have solar? Not if solar was installed at the address in the last 10 years.
Who can claim Solar Homes? Owner-occupiers who meet the income and property value limits above.
Is there a Victorian battery rebate? Solar Victoria's current pages describe no state battery rebate, and battery loan applications have closed. The federal program is the main support for batteries.
